Dubai to Abu Dhabi
by Car Guide

The Dubai to Abu Dhabi route is one of the UAE's most travelled intercity journeys — roughly 140 km along Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) and the Abu Dhabi–Al Ain Road (E22). Whether you're heading to a business meeting in the capital, a hotel on the Corniche, or onward to Abu Dhabi International Airport, a private chauffeur removes every variable: fixed price before you travel, no metered surprises, and a vehicle booked solely for your group.

E11 vs E311: Which Road for Your Journey

E11 (Sheikh Zayed Road) hugs the coastline. It becomes Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Road once you cross into Abu Dhabi. It is the direct choice from Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeirah, Al Barsha, DIFC and Downtown Dubai. It is also the busiest option and passes several Salik gates.

E311 (Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road) runs further inland, parallel to the E11. It is usually less congested and is the better choice for Dubai Hills, Dubai South, Al Maktoum Airport and Yas Island. One incident can make the quieter road the slower one — always confirm with live traffic before you set off.

Which Road Takes You Where You Need to Be

Your destination in Abu Dhabi matters as much as your starting point. The Corniche, Al Reem and central Abu Dhabi sit more naturally on the E11 exit. Yas Island, Khalifa City and Zayed International Airport (AUH) are faster reached via E311.

Timing, Returns and Practical Notes

The road behaves differently depending on direction, day and hour. These four points matter before you set off.

Best Time to Leave Dubai

The road is busiest on weekday mornings towards Abu Dhabi and weekday evenings back to Dubai. Leave after 10am and you avoid the worst of the morning rush and also pass Salik gates in the cheaper off-peak window.

The Return Journey Is Not a Mirror

Abu Dhabi to Dubai behaves differently. The heavy commuter flow reverses in the evening. Plan to leave Abu Dhabi well before 4pm, or after the evening peak has eased — leaving around 8pm usually gives a calmer run.

Driving at Night

The motorway is well lit and easy to follow after dark. Traffic thins out after the evening peak, and the run is often quicker than by day. Watch for fixed and mobile cameras on both roads, and take care in fog during winter mornings.

Driving After a Long-Haul Flight

Landing at DXB and then driving 140 km is not the same as leaving your hotel at 10am. Jet lag and an unfamiliar road make a poor mix. Rest first, or arrange a driver for that leg.

Renting a Car for the Trip

Visitors can generally drive between emirates with a UAE-accepted licence and insured vehicle. Requirements differ by nationality — confirm yours with the rental company. Ask two questions: does the car carry a Salik tag? Who handles Darb registration for Abu Dhabi?

Travelling With a Group or Family

A private chauffeur vehicle often works out less per seat than two taxis once luggage and waiting time are factored in. The fixed fare to Abu Dhabi is confirmed at booking — no meter, no surprises on arrival.

Drive or Train? Etihad Rail Compared

Tolls, Fuel and Parking: What the Drive Involves

A self-drive journey has four running costs: fuel, Salik, Darb and parking. Add the rental itself if you are not using your own car. A private chauffeur transfer rolls all of these into a single fixed fare — no separate toll registers, no fuel receipts, no parking to find.

Salik — Dubai Toll Gates
Variable Pricing by Time of Day
Time of Day Toll per Gate
1am to 6am, daily AED 0
6am to 10am, weekdays AED 6
10am to 4pm, daily AED 4
4pm to 8pm, weekdays AED 6
8pm to 1am, daily AED 4
All day Sunday* AED 4

Your route decides how many gates you cross. Gates such as Al Safa and Jebel Ali sit on the E11 corridor — the primary road out of Dubai toward Abu Dhabi.

*Sunday rate applies except on public holidays and event days, when standard peak/off-peak bands apply. Rates can also change on event days.
Darb — Abu Dhabi Island Bridges
AED 4 per Crossing · Peak Periods

Darb gates sit on the main bridges onto Abu Dhabi Island. They charge AED 4 per crossing during peak periods, which Abu Dhabi Mobility publishes on its Darb page.

Two newer gates opened on 4 May 2026, including one at Ghantoot. They charge around the clock. Check the current tariff before you travel.

Every vehicle must be registered with Darb, including cars from other emirates. A 10-working-day grace period applies after the first crossing. After that, fines start at AED 100 and rise for repeat passes.

Cars with plates from other emirates also face an AED 50 fine per transaction when the Darb balance is too low. Rental cars are usually handled by the hire company — but confirm before you travel.
Fuel
Real Running Cost on a 280 km Round Trip

Fuel is a real part of the bill on a 280 km round trip. UAE pump prices are reset each month, so check the current rate rather than relying on an old figure. Service stations along the E11 near Ghantoot offer fuel, coffee and prayer rooms — a natural place to top up before reaching Abu Dhabi.

Parking in Abu Dhabi
Paid Zones · City Centre · Major Attractions

Most street parking in central Abu Dhabi is paid. Look for the signs and pay through the official channels. Allow extra minutes to find a space near the Corniche and Al Reem Island at busy times.

Major attractions, including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, have their own car parks. Yas Island and Saadiyat Island are easier for parking than the city centre — but check signage on arrival.

A Simple Way to Compare the Cost
Self-Drive
Rental + fuel + Salik + Darb + parking. Each cost is separate, billed at different points, and the total is only known after you arrive.
Rail
Ticket price plus the journey to and from each station at both ends. No tolls, but no door-to-door service either.
Private Chauffeur
A fixed fare confirmed at booking — one number that states what it includes. No tolls to register, no fuel to track, no parking to find. View transfer options →

Etihad Rail vs Private Transfer

Etihad Rail, Car or Chauffeur: Which Suits You?

Etihad Rail began passenger services between Dubai and Abu Dhabi on 30 September 2026. Five direct trains run in each direction. The scheduled journey is about 64 minutes. Fares start at AED 39 for Comfort Class and AED 109 for Premium Class. Some older articles still say there is no train between the two cities — those pages are out of date.

Station to Station

The First and Last Mile

The 64 minutes runs station to station, not from your door. Dubai's Al Yalayis Station is in Jumeirah Golf Estates, linked to the Metro via a pedestrian bridge. You still need to reach it from Dubai Marina or Downtown Dubai.

Etihad Rail has linked the service with the Nol system. Even so, the station adds travel time at both ends.

In Abu Dhabi, Mohamed Bin Zayed City Station sits outside the centre. An official shuttle runs to three destinations for AED 10. Yas Island, Saadiyat Island and Zayed International Airport need further onward transport.

For many addresses, door-to-door time can approach two hours. Check the Etihad Rail app for the live timetable — departure times can change.
